Opening SQL Server 2005 Express Databases (MDF Files) in Visual Studio After Installing SP3

After you install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3 on a software development computer, you may notice that the standalone databases (MDF files) from within your Visual Studio projects may not open (a dialog with an error is presented, indicating that user instances are disabled and must be enabled). This is resolved easily by running this command as a SQL query on the SQL server instance, with administrative rights:

exec sp_configure ‘user instances enabled’, 1; reconfigure
